This is the definition of pragmatics by the experts:

1. studies meaning in relation to speech situation (Leech, 1983).

2. branch of linguistics that studies the external structure of the language, ie, how the language used in the communication unit (Wijana, 1996: 2).

Quite a lot it seems limitations or definitions of pragmatics. Levinson (1987: 1-53), for example, takes 53 pages just to explain what it is pragmatic and what is the scope. Here quoted some of which are considered important enough.

ü Pragmatics is the study of the relationship between the signs (symbols) with the interpreter, while semantics is the study of the relationship between the signs (symbols) with the object referred to by the sign.

ü Pragmatics is the study of the use of language, while the semantics is the study of meaning.

ü Pragmatics is the study of language and functional perspective, meaning that this study tries to explain aspects of linguistic structure with reference to the effects and causes of nonlinguistic.

ü Pragmatics is the study of the relationship between the language of the context is the basis of the explanation of language comprehension.

ü Pragmatics is the study of deiksis, implicature, presupposition, speech acts, and aspects of discourse structure.

ü Pragmatics is the study of how language is used to communicate, especially the relationship between the sentences with the context and situation of usage.

From the definition it can be understood that the scope is very broad pragmatic assessment that is often considered to overlap with the study of discourse or sociolinguistic studies. What is clear is that the unit of study agreed pragmatics is not a word or a sentence, but rather speech acts or speech acts (speech act).

Parker (1986: 11), pragmatics is distinct from grammar, roomates is the study of the internal structure of language. Pragmatics is the study of how language is used to communicate.

Pragmatics is actually a part of science or signs or semiotics Semiotics. The use of the term pragmatics (pragmatics) popularized by a philosopher named Charles Morris (1938), which has a great interest in the science of signs, or semiotics (Semiotics).

In semiotics, Morris distinguishes three different branches in the investigation, namely: the syntactic (Syntactics) or syntax (syntax) is a formal study of the relation of the sign with the sign of the other one (study unit lingual relations with other lingual units: mark with an asterisk) ; semantics (semantics) is the study of signs relation to the object where the signs were implemented (tagged) (or the relationship between the signifier and the signified (signifiant and signifie / marked)), and pragmatics is the study of relationships signs the interpreter (interpreters). The three branches are then better known as the theory of trichotomy.

In essence, the pragmatic function of language is that it contains social aspects that emphasize how to convey meaning in an appropriate manner in the context provided. Pragmatic determine how to choose the right combination of words for the situation. For example, 'excuse me, passing through' a lot more polite than 'Move!'.
